Jim Coleman – LinkedIn

Jim was previously a SaaS operations manager at a private equity firm, LTV SaaS Growth Fund. He oversaw operations and high-level growth initiatives across a portfolio of SaaS holdings.

He vetted potential SaaS acquisitions, led due diligence, and the post-acquisition handover processes of multiple SaaS assets.

Jim’s also a SaaS business owner and knows the SaaS world very well. He loves helping owners and operators improve their game.

David Tran – LinkedIn

David studied Computer Science at UC Berkeley. He was fascinated by the potential of both how broad and how deep one can go in the understanding the digital world. He then went on to become a software engineer at Uber & Salesforce. In those companies, he spent time on internal tools, growth hacking, mobile apps, optimizing dispatch, and anti-fraud backend development.

On the side, he manages a set of SaaS apps, and took what he & Jim learned there to build the foundations of xFusion. Outside of work, he loves learning about entrepreneurship, psychology, investing, and personal development. Case Study

We started xFusion, which provides outsourced customer support, in the spring of 2020, right at the beginning of the pandemic. David and I had a hunch that cold email may work for us as an acquisition channel, but we were new at the game.

In the spring of 2020 I wrote the world’s longest cold email (contrary to popular best practice guidelines) pitching to Shopify app owners. And, wouldn’t you know it, it worked! We landed several clients from that first email that are still with us to this day.

We knew we were onto something and needed to scale. We literally sent that first round of emails via my well-established personal Gmail account. From there we became students of cold email in general, copywriting, subject lines, anti-spam techniques, sending windows, bounce rates, and everything in between.

We experimented with utilizing personal Gmails in larger numbers. That was tough. We got negative feedback from recipients that our email addresses looked unprofessional (and they did). It was also remarkably challenging to verify all those Gmail accounts with phone numbers. It became clear pretty quickly that this approach wasn’t scalable.

Next up, we switched to purchasing domains and setting up Gsuite accounts that were better branded. We also did a LOT of trial and error on anti-spam prevention techniques, list cleaning, sending windows, sending volume, time of day, subject lines, and email copy.

Things improved, but we needed better structure and organization to scale our sending. We were using various email sending tools and CRMs duct taped together. It worked, but barely, and clearly wasn’t able to handle scale. David and I tasked our technical team at xFusion to build a comprehensive SaaS tool and process that handled every aspect of cold email outbound from lead collection, to cleaning, to sending in mass quantities.

We refined and perfected this system over time, and have since grown xFusion to roughly 70 hard working team members and 23 clients–all as a result of cold email outbound. David and I realized if we had this much trouble sending emails at scale, many others must struggle as well. Thus, Outbound Scaling was born!
